Crawfordsville Main Street is proud to launch the Architecture & Engineering Grant (A&E) for Conditions Assessments on Downtown Historic Properties. 

This grant was made possible by the City of Crawfordsville via ARPA (American Rescue Plan Act) dollars, under the category of Small Business Technical Support.  The city’s allocation of $100,000 will allow several downtown properties to benefit from this program. Grants are awarded on a first come – first serve basis.

What is the A & E Conditions Assessment Grant?

The Conditions Assessment will include in-depth details on: 

  • ​The current conditions of the building -interior and exterior finishes, structural integrity, building systems, and historic ornamentation.

  • Details on what is needed to rehabilitate the building and phased plan to execute the required work.

  • Estimated costs to rehabilitate to property for the planned future use.

This is the first step in rehabilitating your historic property. Crawfordsville and its preservation partners can assist grant participants to source future funding for execution of identified work through existing Federal and State grant and tax incentive programs.

Who Qualifies for the A&E Conditions Assessment Grant?

  • Historic properties 50 years or older that are located in the Crawfordsville Commercial Historic District [Natl Register of Historic Places 1992]

  • The property must be owned by a private individual, a private business, or a non-profit organization.

  • Property used for commercial, residential, mixed-use, or places of worship.

  • Property owners must match 40% of the cost of the Conditions Assessments, and the A & E grant program will cover 60% of the cost.

  • Cost of the Conditions Assessments will vary by building size and condition but will not exceed $10,000. The average cost is $5,000 to $7,000 for a Conditions Assessment.

How Does the A&E Conditions Assessment Grant Work?

  • Apply with 1-page application

  • Decisions made by the grant review team on a quarterly basis 

  • Support from CMS on any questions during the application process.

  • Grant applicants will contract qualified firms (pre-vetted by Crawfordsville Main Street) for the Conditions Assessment

What is the timeline for the A&E Conditions Assessment Grant?

  • Deadlines at the end of each quarter:

    • ​First Quarter: March 29, 2024

    • ​Second Quarter: June 28, 2024

    • Third Quarter: September 27, 2024

    • Fourth Quarter: January 3, 2025

  • Grants awarded on a First come – First Serve basis

  • Grant awardees will be notified within 3 weeks after deadline and funds distributed when their building assessment has been completed
