There is a cute little flower shop on E. Market St. that carries a long history of serving this community. With every heartbeat of romance, the warmth of friendship, the joy of celebration, and the embrace of sympathy, Just Because Flowers, Gifts & More has gracefully answered their calling since 2017.

Trish Overpeck, Sheila Cox, and Carla Earl formed the trio behind the creation of Just Because Flowers, Gifts & More. Already friends, each was pursuing their own career paths: Trish worked at Wabash College, Sheila drove a school bus, and Carla worked at ProGreen Garden Center as a landscape designer.
Curious how it all began? It started with a heartfelt prayer from Trish, seeking a change in her career, followed by a challenge to The Almighty for a clear and specific answer. Trish had noticed that Flowers ‘N Things, the former flower shop at the E. Market St. location, was up for sale. She felt a strong inclination to embark on this journey, but not alone. One Sunday morning, on her way to church, she prayed that if this dream was meant to be, God would place Sheila and Carla right in front of her simultaneously. And indeed, He did. That morning at church, they all met at the same time in the center of the fellowship hall, confirming for Trish that her prayer had been answered, and now she just needed Sheila and Carla to join her in pursuing the dream together.

Trish proposed the idea of opening a flower shop together to both Carla and Sheila. Carla, who had prior experience at Flowers ‘N Things, quickly agreed. However, Sheila was hesitant and declined the offer initially. Known for her background in furniture restoration, she was uncertain about how her skills would align with a flower shop. Trish, despite lacking experience in flower arrangements, expressed her interest in handling the financial aspects of their new venture. After a series of discussions, prayers, and the right opportunities presenting themselves at just the right moments, their responses shifted to “yes,” marking the beginning of their journey. As Trish remarked, “It was totally God!
There were countless hours of work put into creating a space that was welcoming and that allowed them to meet their mission in serving our community. Husbands and family all pitched in with painting, cleaning, and designing the shop. The trio of friends stepped into working together just like sisters and Just Because Flowers, Gifts & More was opened in July of 2017.
This shop was not just for flowers but for gifts, furniture, and whatever might bring to life the heart of their business. The mission and heart of Just Because Flowers, Gifts & More is to simply love people and serve this entire community with love. In the business of a flower and gift shop, there are so many opportunities to do this. There are events surrounded by joy, such as a wedding or a birthday, but also those events that stir sadness and grief at the loss of a loved one.
They have encountered moments where they care for a bride during her wedding preparations, only to swiftly transition to supporting a grieving family in their time of loss. They have shared prayers, offered comforting hugs, and took part in the joyous celebrations of newlyweds, all while honoring the memories of those who have passed on. Their business allows them to infuse love and hope into every occasion.

Starting a business can be quite challenging. Trish, Sheila, and Carla began this journey with limited experience, each contributing in their own way. There were individuals that played a vital role in the establishment of Just Because. Mike Gaby, an accountant, served as a mentor to Trish, guiding her through the details of managing a small business and its financial aspects. Additionally, Rafena Spencer, a former employee of Flowers ‘N Things, shared her knowledge and provided training to Carla in the art of flower arranging. All three women learned from one another and embraced the unique talents each brought to the table as they collaborated to grow the business.
Just like any small business, there are periods of success and challenges, and those early years taught valuable lessons in both prosperity and hardship. The most difficult season for the shop was in 2020. Tragically, in April of 2020, Trish’s husband, Jeff, passed away. Trish then stepped away from the shop and worked for Mike Gaby's accounting office until December. During this period, everyone rallied around Trish to support her through her grief. Then, in November of that year, Sheila felt a pull to step away from the business permanently to spend more time with her grandchildren. Carla carried on at the shop, even through Covid, which brought its own struggles. Carla and Trish pressed on in faith for what the future would bring as they supported each other through the changes.

When questioned about their advice for small businesses, whether just beginning or already on their journey, they revealed a significant realization regarding their own misconceptions about business growth. They hadn't anticipated the lengthy wait for their first paycheck as owners, which turned out to be three years. They had assumed it would come much sooner, but that was not the case. Establishing a business truly requires patience and time. As a partnership-based business, they emphasized that effective communication is crucial for collaboration. They regarded each other as sisters, enabling them to be completely honest with one another. This strong bond allowed them to consistently be aligned, which was instrumental in overcoming challenges together.
Trish came to understand that following the challenges of 2020, she and her partners had never considered discussing an exit strategy for their partnership. These business relationships can shift and evolve over time, leading to unique situations that can affect both the direction and finances of a business. She urges fellow business owners and partners to develop exit strategies for their enterprises. Life can present unexpected circumstances, and having a plan in place can help facilitate the transition during times of change.
Carla’s advise to other business owners is to be brave and follow your dreams. If you have a passion or hobby that you enjoy then you should pursue it. However, you should certainly seek advice by talking to other business owners and learning from them.
In 2024, the business continues to thrive, prioritizing their passion for people and the joy of spreading love throughout the community. They have received numerous compliments from customers about the comforting aromas in the shop, the welcoming atmosphere while shopping, and the staff's remarkable ability to surpass expectations with their orders.
Trish and Carla are the driving force behind Just Because Flowers, Gifts & More, dedicating themselves to serving this community and its people with immense love.
